Case Studies
| Project: | DART Interconnector Tunnel |
| Overview: | The DART Underground rail line, now proposed to run from the Docklands in Dublin’s North East to Inchicore in the West of the City, will complete the trebling of the Greater Dublin area's rail service capacity from 33 million passenger journeys annually now to 100 million passenger journeys upon completion. DART Underground will be the single most important piece of infrastructure in the state to ensure a modal shift from private to public transport, and free future generations from the gridlock which cripples the Greater Dublin area today. It is a central part of the Government's Transport 21 ten-year transport investment plan. It also links all rail modes - DART, Commuter, Intercity, Luas and Metro - to form an integrated cohesive network. |
| Survey Requirements: | Murphy Surveys were employed to carry our all above ground surveys required. This included complete topographic surveys of all lands within the permanent wayside. The route the DART Interconnector tunnel takes cross the path of very high profile property locations and listed buildings which increased the complexity of the project. In addition to this, we also completed high precision rail track surveys which were carried out using rail trolley systems. These complete rail track surveys incorporated the rail track and all associated infrastructure. We were also responsible for co-ordination of access to the most restricted Irish rail properties and locations. Works were carried out by 6 survey crews working in 24 hours shifts. St Stephens Green, a central location and a key junction in this project will see the Interconnector Tunnel meet with the planned Metro North and the existing Green LUAS tramline. Our experience of all three projects and owing to our work with the RPA (Railway Procurement Agency) meant that our extensive knowledge of the design network and co-ordinates enables us to find the optimum solution for the control framework. Extensive road surveys were carried out using remote sensing laser scanning technology which reduced the need for traffic management. In addition to the surveys mentioned previously, we also installed a rigorous control network that will remain in place during construction. As a direct result of the quality of work displayed on this project in addition to the accuracy and efficiency with which we completed the project, we were also employed to complete the utility survey contract for which we completed a full GPR and Utility Mapping survey of the route. |
