Murphy Surveys recently successfully completed the Crossrail C430 I&M contract at London, Farringdon Station for Laing O’Rourke – Strabag JV. We are working, along with our partner Geodata, on C410 Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road SCL monitoring for the BFK JV, and on the Vauxhall LU station upgrade project for Bechtel.

Track and Topographic Surveys

Murphy Surveys applies experience and technology to overcome challenges of railway line surveying such as time and access constraints. Our use of remote data capturing equipment, reduces costly line blockages and disruptions. Static Laser Scanning or the Amberg Track Trolley System (GRP5000), captures a complete database of the area. If any additional data is required, this can be extracted from the point cloud at a later stage, cutting out any future need for expensive and inefficient site revisits.

Traditional track surveys can be carried out using a Total Station and Detail Pole. With the Amberg GRP1000 Track Trolley, our expert surveyors can undertake track alignment surveys quickly and accurately to provide cant and gauge measurements along the length of the track Specific details of the permanent way such as signals, welds and switches and platform edges are recorded as per the clients requirements and in line with the relevant infrastructure owners specification. All data can be provided in a 2D CAD or 3D solid model in Microstation V8i or AutoCAD as required.

Monitoring Solutions

Either manual or automated monitoring systems are used to check for movement within the ground or physical structures. The scale and duration of the project determines which type of system and methodology is used, and Murphy Surveys is experienced in both. We partner in a joint venture with GEODATA. The GEODATA group is an innovative supplier of integrated, IT-based solutions and services in the areas of tunnel surveying, geotechnical and structural monitoring. Murphy Surveys provides the manual monitoring solutions supplementing the automated systems and this has been phenomenally successful to date. High order robotic stations, precise digital levels, and precise measurement equipment such as inclinometers, tilt sensors, and electro level beams are just some of the resources we use to monitor movement.


Static or Dynamic Scanning

Static Laser Scanning can be carried out to obtain high accuracy positions of inaccessible structures and objects from a position of safety. Bridge structures or building facades can be surveyed from ground level so that a 2D or 3D drawing, wireframe or solid model can be produced to check the as-built position or used for design purposes. The laser scan data can be fed into a Building Information Model (BIM) to ensure clash-free construction occurs. Dynamic Scanning using the Amberg GRP5000 system allows for profile information in relation to the track to be quickly and accurately captured. For clearance, the SCO files can be generated directly from the point cloud and exported using the Amberg Clearance Software Package. Height and stagger information can also be obtained directly from the point cloud information with the software automatically creating separate line strings for overhead line equipment which can then be easily exported.  We also have the capability to undertake clearance surveys and platform gauging using the Abtus routescan™ gauge.

Aerial Survey

Aerial and GIS 

For large areas or long sections of track, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) Surveys can be carried out using a fixed wing / multi-rotor drone or helicopter. Point cloud data along with vertical aerial and oblique imagery can be collected without any possession or line blockage requirements. We have developed an in-house Geographic Information System (GIS), which allows for the recorded information to be accessed quickly with the option of automated sections to be drawn instantly from any position along the track which you may require.

3D Utility

Underground Utility Surveys

Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) we determine the exact position and depth of buried utilities along the lines or on other rail infrastructure property. This non-intrusive technique locates sub-surface utilities, rebar, conduits, voids and other features, both natural and manmade. GPR can be used on a variety of media including rock, soil, ice, fresh water, pavements and concrete structures. It is cost effective, fast, efficient and accurate; offering on site real time data with 3D imaging capabilities. Murphy Surveys was one of the first companies in the UK and Ireland to adopt GPR methods, and is therefore one of the most skilled and experienced.

Engineering Surveys

Murphy Surveys has the expertise to assist with any rail related engineering works which may be required during track renewals and enhancements. This could be in the form of setting out of S&C’s, Track and Slab Track, Machine Control for Ballasted Track Replacement (BTR) or Earthworks, Clearance/Gauging Surveys (RVAR), track alignment surveys and monitoring.
