Colin Murphy is appointed as a Fellow with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors
We’re pleased to announce Colin Murphy has been granted a Fellowship with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES).
‘I’m honored to join the ICES as a Fellow. As a company we’ve always supported the ICES’ mission to advance the science and art of civil engineering surveying in all aspects of geospatial engineering.’
‘As Co-owner and Development Director for Murphy Surveys I’ve built up our company into an industry-leading organisation employing 250+ across 11 offices in Ireland, UK and mainland Europe. Building on the legacy, reputation and passion demonstrated by my late father and founder of the company Peter Murphy, I’m constantly looking at ways in which to drive the business with new innovations, investing in the development our staff and never resting on our laurels. I believe that in order to sustain and safeguard our profession, we need to nurture new talent and I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge across our industry.’
ICES chief executive officer Bill Pryke commented: ‘I am delighted to see Colin Murphy take up this fellowship. Colin is a supporter of ICES and runs one of our Approved Development Schemes. He has shown great leadership within geospatial engineering and his promotion of continual learning and the professionalism of surveying amongst his staff demonstrates this.’
After he graduated from the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) with a Certificate in Geo-Surveying, Colin was handed the reigns of the business at the age of 20 following the sudden death of his father Peter Murphy. Determined to honour his father’s legacy and support the family he worked tirelessly to build the family business.
With the company steadily growing, in 2000 his brother Ray Murphy joined after graduating from the DIT. His passion and vision for the surveying industry was recognised early on as he was awarded “Top Geomatics Graduate” by the Irish Institution of Surveyors (IIS). Four years later his third brother Niall Murphy graduated and joined the business. The support and passion demonstrated by Colin, Ray and Niall was instrumental in helping develop a strong team and firm foundations that would enable the organisation to enter a rapid growth period. By 2006 the business was leading the Geospatial Consultancy in Ireland, so the brothers set their sights on the UK market to further develop the business and Colin made the decision to move to the UK.
Back in Ireland Colin’s youngest brother Diarmuid Murphy joined the company in 2009 after graduating from DIT with a BSc in Construction Economics and Management. It was now that the family business was complete with 4 brothers driving the legacy their father left behind.
The company continues to expand and offers a full range of services to provide geospatial certainty across construction, property, heritage, infrastructure, plant process and utilities sectors, with clients including HS2, Crossrail, Thames Water, Mace Group and Cluttons to name a few.
Today Colin is based at the company’s UK HQ in Central London and is as a member of the Newcastle University external advisory board and a supporter of the Geospatial Technician Apprenticeship scheme.
